Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades underlie long-term mitogenic,
morphogenic, and secretory activities of purinergic receptors. In HEK-293 cells, N-
ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA) activates endogenous A 2B ARs that signal through G
s and G q/11. UTP activates P2Y 2 receptors and signals only through G q/11. The MAPK
isoforms, extracellular-signal regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK), are activated by NECA and UTP.
