Although systolic arterial pressures have been obtained routinely for over 30 years
employing rat tail-cuff methods, validity of these techniques for unanesthetized rats has been
questioned. Indwelling carotid arterial cannulas were inserted in 15 rats (10 normotensive
and 5 spontaneously hypertensive); and the relationship between directly recorded systolic
pressure and simultaneously recorded indirect tail-cuff pressures were obtained over a wide
